FTC 12354 - 2019/20 Season
The BC FTC Championship was a learning experience for all, with the team coming together to solve problems on the fly and present their work in front of judges. The team seeded third in qualification matches (best match performance to date!) and won the judges' award, which celebrates unique efforts, performance or dynamics merit recognition.

With a redesigned pickup mechanism that integrated an elevator to overcome the height of the foundation, flippers back on the back to pull the foundation, and a new capstone/servo delivery arm, the team (including some new faces!) took on the challenge of the next league event. Ben was so fast, it took the dirvers some gettting used to, but the speed combined with a few reliable autonomous modes worked in the end. Kudos for ranking 1st!

Much was learned from the rack and pinion elevator concept (finicky) using servos (slow). Had trouble picking the block up from the centre of the bot. Examined what worked in previous year that would better keep up with the speed of the drive base.

Despite a software glitch with the phone OS in the first match, Ben and the team came out and played well. Rookie team members got competition drive practice, no mechanical breakdowns occurred, and the team even had time to do a little design and coding work on the side. They came in second place - best standing our FTC team has achieved to date! Congrats to the Renolds Reybots rookies on winning!

Officially dubbed "Ben", the little bot got a number of upgrades to get ready for the first league event. The pickup mechanism was refined to stop the block from moving or being launched. Electronics were re-routed and cabling tidied. Side panels were added for the team number an alliance markers. Our signature LED lights were also added and matched to the allience color by opmode.

A block pickup mechnaism was added. It may not be accurate, and it may not stack blocks, but it is quick! Cardboard prototyping was used to help refine the design and figure out what did and did not work.

Game simulation, drive practice, and lift/pickup conceptual design! Having team members pretend to be the robot in order to establish a clear vision and goals for the competition was useful before drive practice began. Drivers got used to basic field dimensions, tasks, and timings, as well as robot handling. The design team working on the lift/pick-up concept for the stones worked through a number of advantages and disadvantages of different designs. The programming team used the gyro data to create a turn right/left 90 degrees from current position on button press routine. They also got Vuforia working to recognize the Skystone.

Once we had our pushbot, we needed something to push - and pull! Getting creative on a budget involved making our own foundation using a baking tray, plastic lids, and cardboard "knobs" for the stone to stack on. A simple pulling concept using servos was implemented. The programming team successfully utilized the onboard gyro data to obtain heading information.

Team 12354 was ranked 15th after the qualification matches; however, due to our bot's mechanical reliability and consistent autonomous code, the team was selected by the 4th ranked team, Escape Velocity 14343, to play in the semifinals. Although we did not make it through to the finals, played hard, helped out our alliance members, and had fun.

Rusty and the team have come a long way since November! Our effort paid off in the league event, ranking 2nd this time. Important strategy, scouting, and judging lessons were noted. On to provincial championships in February, and Rusty will have a few new tricks to show off!

Through mechanical misfortunes, dimensional difficulties, coding conundrums, and allen key abandonment, the team rode out the roller coaster of emotions that was their first competition event. We may have only placed 9th of 11, but we learned a lot.

Team 12354 is working on the design for "Rusty" to compete in this year's FTC challenge. The focus this year is to improve our autonomous code, practice driving skills, develop our engineering notebook, and showcase what we have learned to our school and community. "Rusty" has been learning some new tricks, so we'll see what he can do at provincials in February!
